Computer Business Opportunity - Spotting the Scams
By Alan on May 2, 2008 in Home Business Tips
You have probably received some emails or read ads that promised get rich quick plans. Maybe they were about making a six figure income right from your computer or getting rich working at home. Both of these are possible, but generally not through these scams. The Internet is full of these cons and people need to realize this. Too many people are intent on getting rich that they fail to pay attention. Remember the old adage, “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” In most cases, this holds true, so it is worth paying attention to.
Fortunately, there are plenty of computer business opportunities that will allow you to make a nice income. You may even get rich, but that won’t happen overnight! Once you learn how to spot a good opportunity you will be prepared!
The first thing you should know is that when a computer based business opportunity is offered to you it should be realistic. If there are big promises then you should recognize it as a con outright. Making a six figure income overnight is not realistic and is just not going to happen.
In this situation, an example is always helpful. One opportunity online that is actually legitimate is a mail order service. This particular service may make you money, but it probably won’t make you rich. Those who are successful work all the time and don’t have the peace of a 9 to 5 job! If an opportunity makes it sound like you will be receiving checks in the mail while watching TV then you know immediately it is a scam! Keep in mind, however, that no matter how you work from home if you are working for yourself you will never be able to leave the office, so to speak. This means that until you are financially able to hire some help you will be doing all the work yourself. And that is a lot of work!
Remember, too, that anybody can set up a website. Just because a website looks legitimate doesn’t mean it is. And, just because a website has a testimonials section on it does not mean they were written by actual individuals who had those opinions. Many people just make up testimonials to make their site seem more legitimate and increase their popularity. Unfortunately, it works and creates a false sense of security for many. Don’t forget that photos, names, and locations don’t mean a testimonial is real. All of this information can easily be fabricated, too, so keep that in mind.
Never take part in a business opportunity that requires you to pay for it up front. If you are being offered a job then the job should pay you, not the other way around. Even if a company only charges you $20 or so don’t buy into it. It is a scam and you are lining the pockets of thieves rather than real entrepreneurs.
It may not seem like it, but there really are some computer based business opportunities out there that are worth your effort and time. Always check with the Better Business Bureau first as well as the US Small Business Administration to cover yourself. You can also use these resources to your advantage and get advice on starting your own business!
